Putting my money where my mouth is....

July 10th, 2007 at 04:38 pm

I've been complaining to the household in general about the amount of junk mail I've been getting lately. And of all the wasted paper (poor trees) that goes into it. I have shredded and shredded. Yesterday, when I was almost using up yet another roll of paper towels, I had one of those moments of clarity. I was wasting paper. True, I buy the paper towels on sale, but I go through them like crazy. Especially in the kitchen. So, I went out to the store yesterday and bought a new batch of inexpensive kitchen dish cloths and found an extra unused sponge in the kitchen. It has been awkward to stop myself from reaching for a paper towel or two. It is such a habit. And I had always used the good, heavy duty kind. They are a bit more expensive. I am going to try to calculate, using my paper column in my budget, how much I save in paper towels over the next few months. I already wash a load of hand towels and dish towels each week, so the new cloths won't add to the water expenses. If nothing else, I'll save some trees. Now, I wonder what else I complain about that is somewhat within my control....

I stayed with my dil before the birth of my granddaughter and they are very conscious of recycling, not using paper towels unless you have to. Anyway, they collect their old throwaways and use them to clean up the floor or whatever they need them for. They clean their mirrors, dust the tables, etc. I used to do alot of that and after coming back home started recycling again and using more old towels. She had bought the diapers so she wouldn't have to use the disposables although they use them when they are out. Others can be an example for you.

Every time an old bath towel wears out I cut it into cloths and use it in the kitchen. I have a bin that sits on the counter next to the sink that is full of these. It is right underneath the paper towel holder, so I am easily reminded when I go to grab a paper towel to think which I need. I've gotten to the point where I only use paper towels to drain greasy food, but I've been wondering lately if I can't use the cloths for that even.

I use rags too. I guess it is the way you were raised? My DH uses paper towels to dry his hands all the time. Drives me crazy as the dish towel is RIGHT THERE! I have been using the Windex disposable towels for cleaning and the bathroom ones that disinigrate (sp?) for the bathroom.
