One thing I won't do again....

November 3rd, 2006 at 05:04 pm

is buy scented garbage bags. These were a store brand that we usually use. They were also a larger box than normally available. But they had a scent. Well, since we now have DD's kitty and the dogs, I thought that might be nice. Wrong! They smell---well, weird. And every time you open the trash can, the bags send out a whiff of strange air. Now, many people may love scented bags and that's cool. But these have not the appeal. And to top it off, the darn box never runs out! We think it is a never ending box, which is great frugalwise, but we are stuck with the scent until it finally does. So I have decided that although I love wonderful scents, I'm not sure garbage bags are the way to get it. And while these may be frugal, I am going to stay on the safe side....

so now your garbage smells like it's growing flowers, hm? been there, not pleasant!

next time you have regular bags, try spraying the trashcan w/ generic febreeze every once & a while (yes, even w/ trash in the bag). it's not fool-proof, but it's not quite flowery trash either *g*

Tina, that's an idea! These don't smell quite like anything I've ever known. Not sure if they are supposed to smell like flowers or what?

Um. I don't want my garbage to smell of anything.

When it smells it gets taken out. I don't spray it with anything. I remove it. Even covered up with prety smells its disgusting to have old rotting festering garbage around.

    "Tina, that's an idea!"

hahahaha!!!!! could be good, could be bad, but it's definitely an idea! *g* probably not what you were intending at all, but the thought still made me chuckle and think "i gotta remember to use that!"

Yep, I meant that it was a good idea to try out. Definitely not the brightest bulb today.

I orginally bought these bags cos they were in a larger quantity than the unscented ones by this brand. I liked the idea of having more per box, but the unscented didn't come in the large sized box.

Have you try throwing a handful of baking soda in the trash? I find it works well at getting rid of trash odor or any other unpleasant smell Smile

My trash never smells because I separate the perishables and toss them in a bag in the freezer. On Friday morning I throw it out with the rest of the trash. That's kitchen trash, though. Now bathroom trash -- it doesn't go in the freezer no matter how smelly it is!

We always throw the trash out each evening so there really isn't anything much to smell for very long. Occasionally, we have a dog mishap that goes outside at once if at all possible. During the monsoons, I might put it in the garage til I can wade to the trash bins. I just tried these bags and they sure weren't what I thought. Kimiko, the baking soda idea is another good one that I haven't thought of doing! Carolina: I'm so forgetful, we'd probably find the trash later in the month! Interesting idea!

jan, another thingg to try: save old jars (mayo, spaghetti sauce, etc) and when yo have a potential stinker, put it in the jar and seal 'er up. my grandmother does this w/ chicken scraps. no smell, and the cats won't try to get in the trash!

I struggle with smelly garbage every once in a while and I've tried both the scented bags and the Frebeze idea. The Frebreze idea works better. While I agree that taking the garbage out immediately is the best idea. It is simply not possible here. I have garbage pickup once week. If I take the garbage outside more often than that something (coyotes, racoons, Possums even an occasional bear) will get into it. Even animal proof garbage cans don't work. They aren't smell proof and they are still attracted to the can and will attack it. They are then attracted and linger around the house. It is a problem.

Yikes! Once staying in the Smokies, we had a bear in the trash. That's not something you want to have hang around! Nor skunks, either.
